And here I go again!

Yes, I totallly beat NaNoWriMo last year and I’m back for another round. 50,000 words in a month, here I come. I’m going to try my best to update everyday on here too.

This year I have choosen to write Young Adult Fiction. I’ve recently been reading a lot of Sara Shepard (The Lying Game and Pretty Little Lairs) so that will definately be a big influence on this book. Also a comment a friend said about something we were watching stood out to me and made me rethink exactly what I wanted to happen with the novel. I’m so excited with the direction though. I’ve been ready to write for weeks but waited.

One thing surprised me about my first day of writing. I’m suddenly writing in third person. My other novels have always been first person. I think my unconscience choice to do that comes from the fact that most books I have read lately are written that way. It might also come from the fact that the main character is someone I don’t want based on myself. In the past I think I made all my main girls have elements of myself. My new character isn’t that way though. At least yet. So far she is just sad and confused so personality hasn’t started coming out. I know it might sound weird to nonwriters but I really don’t know what she is going to be like yet. Actually the other girls in the novel are coming out with really strong personalities so far. There is one in particular that I really like how she is coming out so far.

Writing is getting a bit overwhelming because I feel like my story has a lot to get through in not very many days. I know I’ll add a lot after the month but I want to at least have the whole story put together before the month is over. I have a feeling my word count is going to be way over 50,000 if I have time. Hopefully. I have the next few days off so I hope I get a lot in.

The piece of advice that hit me was to write a little bit of your next thought so you wouldn’t be staring at a blank page tomorrow. I knew I was going close to being done for the night but I kept thinking about where I needed the story to go for writing on Friday and poof, there was way more words than I expected. Honestly I was just aiming for hitting half today and catching up but I made it.

Sorry I’ve been absent so long. I got behind two days and then have been playing catch up so haven’t had a chance to update on here for a while. Finally last night I caught back up. Trying to get ahead so I wouldn’t fall behind when I go see Harry Potter this weekend. Anyone else planning to go to the midnight showings? Are you dressing up? I think I will but trying to decide who to be. Hermione would be easiest since I have brown curly hair but we will see.

Anyways, writing is going good. The last couple chapters have felt a little slow but they are picking back up. There was a few things that happened in the beginning of the book that I had to relate in. Might end up cutting those parts. Unsure right now. Like there was an issue of mention a kitten at the beginning. Now the family is on the run for quite a while so I couldn’t leave the cat to starve to death. I had my main character go get the cat. Now feel like it is being drug along for no particular reason. Who knows, maybe it will somehow be useful though. If not, editting will have to wait until next month. Now is not the time to be cutting out big chucks. My word count would not like that at all.

Today I had a flash of how I wanted the story to end so I wrote most the ending. I think one of the things I’m loving about NaNoWriMo is I feel like when I have an idea I need to hurry and write it out instead of just taking notes and until I get there. Hopefully I’ll be able to peice it all together okay when I edit. If this writing style works for me I’m definately going to start to stick to it.

Done and done. Well for the day at least. Luckily last night I got ahead so today’s writing was pie. Hitting the 10,000 mark felt really good. It made me laugh thinking about how back in college writing a 5,000 word paper seemed daunting at times. So far this has felt fairly easy. Hoping that feeling keeps up of course.

I am realizing that there will be stuff I have to go back and correct because I’ve wrote things that go against each other. I try to fix them as I go but a lot will have to be fixed in editting. It kind of feels good not to sweat the small stuff right now. When you don’t get hung up on it being perfect, writing seems to come easier. I realized that with the last novel I completed too. Getting the story out became more important and when I went back, I realized that I really loved what I had wrote. Sure it needs fixing but it is a very good base. I think that is what NaNoWriMo is all about. Forcing yourself to get the story out.

When I came up with the idea for my book, there was one particular scene that came to mind. This is the one I’m starting to write. It is exciting because this should be a fairly easy section to write because it has vividly been in my head for a couple of months.

As I got to thinking about the direction my book was going, I realize it was heading in to subject I never imagined I would write about. It has become about quantum physics, esoteric cosmology, and scythian warriors. No, I am not kidding.

Now all have to actually learn about these things.

A lot of that research will probably be done after I finish NaNoWriMo. It will be interesting. I really love how my story is going. There is lots of good verses evil right now. Blurring the lines which I know is kind of cliche but oh well. I think that is something that most people question all the time so seeing it in story format is good.

Struggled a little bit today mostly because A) I was extremely tired from having a long shift on my first day back from vacation in combination with being tired from Bayside/Senses Fail last night, and B) I kind of wanted to go out to the club with my friend.

But I forced myself to write and I am happy with what I ended up with. One of my characters took on a whole history that I had no expected at all. I did some research today but I’ll do much more in the editting stages or possibly when I’m trying to add words towards the end of the month if my goal isn’t met.
