Disney takes over Marvel

It’s true.  Disney corporatation has bought out one of the big names in the comics book world.

Interesting move.  On one hand I absolutely understand why I company would sell to another.  It is all a money game to a point. It gives the company a means to grow that they would have not been able to do on their own.

But I can also see why comic books fans are fearful of the repercussions. Even though Disney is opening saying they are not interested in changing the content, who knows what might happen.  We can at least hope for the best.  I looked up Disney on wikipedia (yes I know what wiki means so understand that it could be false information) but it seems like they have a mixed history on how they handled the situation.  With some movies they ended up selling them to other companies. When faced with groups being upset about Disney allowing Ellen to come out on tv, they stood their ground. Guess we will just have to wait and see what happens with Marvel.

Now onto the actual article.  Who exactly is the guy writing this?  He is researching comic books yet he seems almost to be talking down to comic book fans.  Some of the things he said seem a little off.

For example, the part where he states that comics don’t matter anymore.  It is all about the movies and merchandise. Sure that might be what the corporations things but not to anyone actually involved in the comic book world.  It would be the same as saying that books are of little importance now a days and the movies made from them are more important.  I can’t think of one single author or comic writer that said they made their product in hopes that it would be a movie.  Even the big guys looking for what they can make into a huge hit still have to accept that comics are still central. They give the idea to the bigger picture.  They are extremely important.

I was also very bothered by the fact that he said comics were geared towards young and teenage boys.  Yes, I understand that is a big demographic for them but I have never felt like comics were excluding girls or adults. There is definately plenty of amazing and strong female characters in comics.

Sidenote, when I read this at first I was like this guy is crazy for acting like Disney is so perfect, they own Playboy.  Well, I guess that is just an urban myth. Can’t find anything to back that up.  Did anyone else hear that before?  I know I’ve heard people say that multiple times. Not true at all from what I can tell.

Do you think Marvel being bought out is a good or bad thing?
