Quoting Succubus Blues by Richelle Mead

There was so many quotes from this book that I loved. I’ll do a review tonight or tomorrow as well.

“The Thunderbirds’ season had just started.

-Even though I’m obviously not a Thunderbird fan (go Winterhawks!), I loved the reference to my local hockey league.

“Roman , casually dressed, stood bearing a six-pack of Mountain Dew and two bags of Doritos. ”

-Um hello my dream guy. Yeah it only takes Mt Dew to buy this girls affection.

“Human continually labor under the delusion that there really is a precise set of rules on what sin is and is not, rules that one might break without even realizing it.  In reality, most people know when they do wrong.  They feel it.  Sin is more of a subjective matter than an objective one.”

-I just really thought it was a well worded quote. Something I very much agree with as well.  Usually people know if something they are doing is wrong.  There is a feeling you get, something engrained in you, that tells you as much.

“Back to basics.  The way dating was meant to be: two people, more concerned with each other than their posh venue.”

Amen.

“I just get tired of people always trying to fit the mold, trying  to toe some line, regardless of if it’s right or left. I’m proud to be the best-dressed person in this room.”

An idea I have long concurred with.  Go to a concert in a dress?  Who cares if that is what I wanted to wear.  Fitting in is not the end of the world.

Quoting/Reviewing Heat Stroke by Rachel Caine

Alright so a few days ago I finished reading Heat Stroke.  Just like I suspected, it was better than Ill Wind.  Much more action and drama that kept me turning the pages.  I’m excited to read the rest of the series.

I also ended up looking up what a Djinn was. Basically Djinn is another word for genie although from what I can tell, more religion based.  I remembered hearing the term before but wasn’t sure where.  Then after a little researched I realized it was from American Gods by Neil Gaiman.  The taxi cab driver towards the beginning of the book admits to being a jinn.  The word ifrit also appears but seems to be used interchangably with jinn.  Just like in the Weather Warden books, Gaiman describes the jinn as people of fire and mentions their eyes being different from normal people. I never really understood if the guy that the jinn sleeps with became a jinn too or not.  That part kind of confused me, even reading it again right now.

My favorite quote from Heat Stroke was as follows…

“Hey, be sure to call me if the apocalypse comes.  I need to get some 400-speed film, make sure I get good pictures.”

Doesn’t that sound like something Buffy would have said?

Quoting Ill Wind by Rachel Caine

So I finally caved and started reading the Weather Warden series by Rachel Caine.  They have sounded interesting to me for a while but I was trying  to get through some other series first.

Ill Weather was an okay novel.  There was a lot of just getting from one place to another.  Even more than that, there was a lot of background.  Overall, I would say that this felt like a book setting up the series.  I will say, the characters do have me hooked now and I can’t wait to read more.  Plus, I love Rachel Caine’s writing.  There was lots of quotes I enjoyed.  Here are a couple of my favorites….

“We resonate to the same frequency.”

“Something very wrong about comtemplating murder with the smell of baking in the air.”

“It’s just suicide with a longer fuse.”

Quoting Goddess of Spring by PC Cast

And so my PC Cast reading continues.  Can you tell she has become one of my favorite authors?  I loved Goddess of the Sea and just finished Goddess of Spring.  So in love with the whole story.  I’m a sucker for greek mythology anyways.  Yeah I even loved the show Xena. Seeing a spin on the Hades/Persephone myth was awesome.  Plus I liked how other myths, like the story of Eurydice and Orpheus, were intermixed.  I’m taking a break from the Goddess Summoning Series to read one of the Weather Warden books.  I’m sure it wouldn’t be long until I’m back for more though.

There was so many quotes from the book that I liked but here is one of my favorites…

“She used to be romantic and dewy-eyed and bla,h blah, blah, love, blah, blah. Until life and experience and men had cured her naivete.”

When I read that my first thought was, exactly.  Seriously, that is how I feel myself and I’m almost twenty years younger than this character. Plus the other thing that struck me was how much in reminded me of the song Love Love, Kiss Kiss by Alkaline Trio.  If I remember it correctly it goes “love love love kiss kiss blah blah blah you’re making me sick, I wish you’d just stop showing off, for the rest of us that no one wants to love, it’s hard enough trying to drink another winter all alone.”  See what I mean about them being alike?  Oh no, now I’m going to have that song stuck in my head.  Well, at least it is a good one.

Quoting:Divine by Mistake and Divine by Choice by PC Cast

Sorry it has been forever since I’ve written anything.  Busy month.   Well couple months I guess.  On the bright side, they included two trips to Vegas so can’t complain too much.

I’ve gotten tons of reading in lately.  Already at 29 books read this year which is pretty good. My current addiction is the Partholon books by PC Cast.  Having read the House of Night series, I was excited to see what else she had written.  Divine by Mistake completely sucked me in.  It was hard to put down.  Same goes for Choice and I just started on Blood.  Sometime soon(ish) I’ll do a write up about Rhiannon.  I’m going to have to give myself a Welsh mythology refresher.  I took a class on Welsh and Norse Myths in college, and even wrote a paper on Rhiannon, but I can’t quite remember the story.

Anyways, here are a few quotes that I liked from the books…

Divine by Mistake

As my favorite college prof once sagely said, “Don’t fuck with an English major. They keep lots of useless crap trapped in their heads.  Once in a white they let some of it out and it bites you square on the ass.”

Haha, true story.  Don’t mess with me!

Until then it hadn’t occurred to me that everyone couldn’t control his or her dreams.

Okay this stood out for me because I can control me.  I can like think and make them change.  I honestly until reading this thought that everyone could.  Can they not?  Now I’m so confused.

He blinked again.  Why do I always assume tall guys are smarter? (Note to self: tall guys are not smarter, they’re just more attractive.)

This sounds exactly like something I would say.  This series probably draws me in so much because I think I’m a lot like Shannon.  They things she says and does are very similar to what I would.  Such a great character.

Divine by Choice

I’m not really very musically inclined, although I’d like to be, so I keep trying.

This is totally my new motto.  So fitting for all the singing I do in the car, club, wherever.

Quoting: Burned

From Burned by PC Cast and Kirstin Cast

“Yeah, ’cause we think you’re like Rachel on Glee,” Shaunee said.  “Super annoying, but she has to be in the show ’cause sometimes she comes up with good stuff and kinda saves the day.”

Alright, this quote jumped out at me for two reasons.  The first, most obvious one is that I love Glee and love Rachel.

The second is that it was a pop culture reference.  I always wonder if I should put them in my own writing or not.  I’m an admited pop culture junky so tend to want to lay them on heavy.  It is a risk because if your readers don’t know what you are talking about the majority of the time, you might lose them.  It is also kind of like putting a time stamp on your book.  When I read The Vampire Diaries by L.J. Smith, I know no idea that the first part of the series was written nineteens years ago.  It seems so modern.

Lately, I’ve been going by what genre I am writing to figure out how much to throw in.  For example, my crime book has very few.  Off  the top of my head, I can only think of a few clothing ones to show that my main characters is a designer kind of girl.  It aids to the overall story.  For another book, I am having the character work in a club.  It is much more light feeling and I think the pop culture stuff is fitting.

I wish I had marked the page in Dead in the Family by Charlaine Harris that had the best pop reference ever.  It was something about Sookie hearing Jace Everett’s Bad Things.  For anyone that watches True Blood, it is the theme song.  I thought it was so clever of her to put it in there.   An extra treat to all of us that are big fans of both you might say.

Quoting: Hunted and Tempted

Here’s a few of my favorite quotes from Hunted and Tempted, both by PC and Kirstin Cast…

Hunted

“His lips were soft and warm, and he tasted like Doritos and Mountain Dew, which wasn’t as nasty as you might think.”   -This one reminded me of a line from Looking For Alaska about Alaska tasting like Mountain Dew and cigerettes.

“The only thing I could think was that something must be missing with Erik, or else I was just turning into a nasty skank.  I mean, really.  I didn’t feel like a nasty skank.  I felt like  a girl who liked more than one guy.”   -Haven’t we all been here?  Haha, okay maybe not everyone.

Tempted

“I mean, they take those stupid chastity vows, and if this is what they wear to bed, the vow would be practically unnecessary.  Seriously.  The think almost makes me look unattractive.”   -I just liked this one because my favorite character is Aphrodite

Quoting: Shadow Souls

So every now and then I mark quotes in books that I really like.  I’ve decided I’m going to start typing them out on here.  So yeah, new category.  Please enjoy.

*********

“You can’t say she was too exuberant, like Bonnie, or too serene like Meredith.  Elena was just sweet enough to offset her bright, active, ever-scheming mind.  She was just compassionate enough to make up for her self-confessed egotism, and just skewed enough to ensure that no one would ever call her normal.  She was intensely loyal to her friends and just forgiving enough that she herself considered almost no one an enemy-kinsune and Old Ones of the vampire kind excepted.  She was honest and frank and loving, and of course she had a dark streak in her that her friends simply called wild, but that Damon recognized for what it really was.  It compensated for the naive, soft, ingenous side of her nature.” -The Vampire Diaries, The Return-Shadow Souls by LJ Smith

**********************

This quote jumped out at me because I think it describes me to some point.  I like to think there is a lot of dualities about me that make me very intersting.  People always say that I come across as the sweetest girl they know but then after a while they realize that beyond being sweet, I’m also an impulsive, whirl wind.  Although, the fact that people don’t realize I have a wild streak when they see I have tons of tattoos and even dermal peircings (my back dimples) is beyond me.
