How much are you spending?

So I just saw John Green post this on twitter.

As he pointed out.  Look how much is spent on books.  Only $118 between two or three people.  How sad is that?   They are spending almost 2600 on entertainment thought. Aren’t books  a great form of entertainment too?

I guess this number isn’t as bad as it could be.  If someone buy mass market paperbacks at Target or somewhere like that they are only looking at $6 a book.  So that would be almost 2o books a year.  Put that way, that isn’t too bad at all.  Like my family, the books could be read by every person in the house.

This makes me feel very lucky however that I grew up in a house that spent much more than this towards books.  My mom and brother were never huge readers but they did read a handful a year.  My mom was often books that my dad had already read.  My dad and I however, were huge readers.  I never remember being told no when I wanted a book.

Now a days I don’t even want to stop and think about what percentage of my money goes towards books.  Just yesterday I bought three new ones.  I make much less than the model (but then again, it is just me) and I probably spend an average of 50 a month on books.  That might even be on the low side.

So how would you compare with this model?

I’m guessing I spend around $1,000 a year on books. That would have been more except last year I lived in Bellingham where I found a source of free books. The year before when I worked in a bookstore in Seattle I spent nearly my entire paycheck on books.
